Going for a job interview is stressful no matter what.

But if you’re planning to attend your first English-speaking interview, you might be terrified!

Before your interview, make sure you prepare as much as you can. Check out these five tips to help you get ready!

1. Learn About the Company

This is a MUST! To prepare for your interview, you need to do your homework. Go to the company’s website and check out a bit about their history, their goals, and any other information you can find. Make sure you understand the information on their site; if not, use your English dictionary to help you.

Why do this?

Well, if the interviewer asks you questions about the company (for example, what you know about them or why you want to work there) this is the best way to prepare!

2. Research Common Questions

While each interview is different, there are certain types of questions that are pretty common. Before you attend your big interview, take some time to research these questions. Doing this will help you understand the interviewer and answer their questions confidently.

A few common questions

Tell me about your previous job experience.

→ Mention experience that’s somehow related to the job you’re interviewing for. If you don’t have direct experience, think of how the skills you’ve learned in your past jobs can help you with the new job.

Why did you leave your last job?

→ Try not to speak negatively about your previous company—don’t mention that you hated your manager or that they didn’t pay you enough.

Talk about a difficult situation and how you handled it.

→ Tell the interviewer about a problem you had at your workplace and how you resolved it. It doesn’t have to be a huge problem: maybe a disagreement with a coworker or an unhappy client. Just show that you know how to remain calm and think clearly when there are issues.

What makes you a good fit for our company?

→ The interviewer wants to know why they should hire you. Tell them about the experience or qualities you have that match the company’s goals and culture. This is why it’s important to do your research first!

3. Think About Your Body Language

If you read our post Using Body Language to Communicate, you’ll know that your facial expressions, gestures, posture, and eye contact are important when you’re speaking with someone. These things can be especially useful when your vocabulary is a bit limited.

To make a good impression during your interview, be mindful of your body language!

4. Prepare Some Questions to Ask

Be ready to ask some questions at the end of your interview: This will show the interviewer that you’re interested in the company and that you’ve prepared for the interview.

Think of questions in advance so you know exactly how to ask them when the time comes!

5. Practice

If you’re worried about your English skills, practice, practice, practice! Sometimes, expressing your ideas in English can be hard, and when you’re nervous, it can be almost impossible.

By roleplaying your interview with a friend, you can: practice your pronunciation, memorize any job vocabulary you might need to use, think of how you’ll ask and answer questions, and perfect your body language.

Preparation is Key

Before your next interview in English, try these five tips. By taking some time to get ready, you’ll reduce your stress, appear more confident, and impress the interviewer with your answers!

いかがでしたか?
北米の面接では、誠実であろうと、あまりかしこまって緊張した様子を見せるより、ゆったりと腰掛け(特には美しく足を組んだりして)、リラックスした堂々とした姿が好まれるようですよ!
